“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”

Elizabeth Andrew

This group meets as needed on various days and times and would love to have you join them. Recognizing that our members have very generous hearts, the Volunteer Group is adding new ways to participate while continuing traditions. In addition to Bingo every month, the group hosts a Valentine’s Tea and Christmas Party for Abbington Senior Center. Before Easter, we gather to put together thousands of plastic Easter eggs for a local church who sponsors a community egg hunt.

The Volunteer group also gives specific suggestions on donations to bring to our monthly general meetings.  Examples are handbags for Dress for Success, new toys or hoodies for People in Need, canned foods for the local Food Bank, and pet items for the Humane Society of Delaware County. If you are interested please contact Leaders TBD.

 My Very Own Blanket (MVOB)

One of the options in the Volunteer Interest Group is the My Very Own Blanket group. MVOB is a volunteer driven, nonprofit company that began 20 years ago in Westerville, and provides no-sew fleece blankets for children in foster care.

We are a very social and generous group who meet once a month in a member’s home. Please see the monthly calendar for the current meeting times. We talk, laugh and get to know each other, while we tie cute, soft, warm blankets. We are dedicated to helping children in foster care feel valued and comforted. There is a minimal charge of $10 for a blanket and personalized name tag which features the first name of the maker and the recipient when they receive it. These tags and blankets are a physical expression to remind the foster children they have worth and are loved. The fee also helps with packing and shipping. For more information or to join the group, please contact Marilyn Maehl listed in the WCP Membership directory.

One of our original areas of service that remains active is at Abbington Assisted Living here in Powell. We facilitate an hour of Bingo once a month, calling the numbers, providing one-on-one aid with residents when needed, and handing out special treats to the delighted winners after each game. We have a good time with all of the participants! Every holiday season we hold a Christmas tea, with festive foods and music. And we often hold a similar event in the Spring.

New helpers are always welcome. If you would like to observe or try helping for a month, we meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. For more information, please contact Georgann Insley or Melinda Hoover.
